BIG NEWS! Tor Still Loves Me!!!

Inspiration for DEAD SPOTS
Photograph by Carsten Witte
BIG NEWS!!! My novel DEAD SPOTS has just been picked up by Tor for publication in 2013!!! (I think I need more exclamation marks.)

I'm so thrilled to be working with my amazing and talented editor Melissa Singer on this new novel. She believed in the idea for DEAD SPOTS since I originally pitched the idea and helped me shape it into an awesome and terrifying vision.

I can't wait to start writing it.

I can't wait for you to read it!

I want to give a special shout out to my fabulous agent Hannah Brown Gordon from The Foundry Literary + Media. It's always a comfort knowing she's in my corner.

To get a sneak peek at DEAD SPOTS, check out my Pinterest to see my inspiration for the new novel.

Taking Back Control #2 - Ebooks (Nook and Kobo)

When I first started on my self-publishing journey back in 2008, the majority of my sales were in trade paperback. I sold very few of the Kindle books. Maybe it was the price ($5.99). I didn't pay much attention to my ebook sales since they were only a few dollars a month.

Later, Smashwords came to my attention and I decided to upload the AS THE WORLD DIES trilogy onto that site. The promise of having additional distribution points in the future was enticing. My sales went up a little, but not a lot.

When I took the self-published versions of AS THE WORLD DIES down in 2010, the ebook boom had begun and my sales had increased dramatically. I experimented with pricing on my other self-published novel, PRETTY WHEN SHE KILLS by lowering it, and saw the sales climb. I was impressed, but by then I was deep into revising the zombie trilogy for Tor while still working my day job.

Flash forward in time and I'm now a full-time hybrid author. My income is from both my self-published and traditional books. While my advance from Tor supported me through the last year and a half, the trilogy has yet to payout that advance. That means I won't be seeing royalties for some time yet.

Note: An advance is a sum of money publishers give you as payment for your novel. Any royalties you make off the sales of your book go to repaying this advance. Once the advance has been paid back, you receive royalties on your books. It can sometimes take years to pay back that advance.

I want to continue to be a full-time writer and pay my bills, so I've been concentrating on being more pro-active in several aspects of my writing career.

For a long time I was dependent on Smashwords to deliver my ebooks to Kobo and Nook. Since I hadn't published anything new since 2009, I didn't realize the delay that was taking place between the upload to Smashwords and the book's arrival at Kobo and Nook. Last year when I self-published AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES VOL 1, I received a lot of complaints that the book wasn't available in Nook. I double-checked with Smashwords to make sure it was approved to be sent to Kobo and Nook, and it appeared everything was okay.

This year I experienced the same problem with the publication of AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES VOL 2 and THE LAST BASTION OF THE LIVING.  There was a significant delay between when the paperback and Kindle version was available and the other ebook formats. It really bothered me when fans sent me messages upset that they couldn't find the version they needed.

I was speaking with another author, Jessica Meigs, when she brought up PubIt, the Barnes & Noble equivalent of the Kindle Direct Publishing website. I had avoided using it because it seemed much easier to upload the books to Smashwords and let them distribute the books. But the delays were worrying me.

Also, I realized I would prefer to receive a check every month (after an initial 60 day delay), then wait a month after a quarter ended to receive my royalties from Smashwords. Since my income is my publishing royalties, I would rather have my money quicker than slower. I do admit that the hard part of being a full-time writer is not receiving a monthly paycheck.

Therefore, I recently opted out of distributing my books for Nook and Kobo through Smashwords, so I can upload them directly to both the Nook and Kobo stores. It took a little extra time to upload all the books myself, but within 24 hours they were live.

In the future, when I self-publish, I will continue this practice so that my readership will have immediate access to the newly published works in both Kindle and Nook formats.

The last year and a half has been an amazing learning experience as I venture into the world of being a full-time writer and I'm still finding my way.

Taking Back Control - Part One - The Vampire Bride Series

If you have followed my blog for any amount of time or read any interviews I've done, you know that the one book I've written that is closest to my heart is THE TALE OF THE VAMPIRE BRIDE. Conceived in a dream when I was around twenty-six years old, it would take over a decade of starts and stops before I finally completed the novel.  It was published in 2009 by an imprint of a small press, Twisted Library, much to my delight.  It would take years before the novel found its audience, but when emails and sales indicated an interest in a sequel, I wrote THE VENGEANCE OF THE VAMPIRE BRIDE and self-published it in 2011.

The story of English aristocrat, Lady Glynis Wright, remains my favorite of all my novels. I adore her determination, rebellious nature, and inner strength. The gothic setting of Buda, Hungary of the 1820's is the perfect backdrop for her quest for independence from her vampire creator and master, Count Vlad Dracula.

At this time I have at least four more novel ideas in the series.  Her series is the only one that I regard as endlessly "open." I have no idea how many books I'll write about her. If a story reveals itself, I will write it. It has yet to reach the popularity of the AS THE WORLD DIES zombie trilogy, or the PRETTY WHEN SHE DIES trilogy, but I don't think it's because of the story.

I think it's the covers.

previously wrote  about cover overhauls.  Tor has altered the covers of the trade paperbacks before publication and are re-doing the covers for the mass market paperbacks that will be released starting later this year.  In that same post, I also discussed the reasons for the change to THE TALE OF THE VAMPIRE BRIDE cover.  Though I loved the artwork by Detra, the same artist who did the original AS THE WORLD DIES covers, it failed to draw in readers.  Also, there were many snide comments left about the cover in glowing reviews on amazon.com. A few reviewers even said they almost didn't read the book because of the cover.

The publisher and I also had difficulty finding review bloggers willing to read the book.  I have spoken to multiple bloggers who have told me the same thing over and over again: if the cover doesn't grab them immediately they will pass on reviewing the book.

Since I loved Philip Rogers work on my zombie novels (AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES 1 & 2 and THE LIVING DEAD BOY AND THE ZOMBIE HUNTERS), the publisher of Twisted Library (and the imprint of the Library of Horror Press) agreed to commission new artwork from him.
Philip did an amazing job bringing a very gothic feel to the cover and adding elements like Vlad Dracula.  I really loved his shadow reaching for Glynis.

We happily uploaded the new cover files and...
The same thing happened.  At this point we realized it was the fact that the covers were painted artwork and NOT photo-manipulations that was causing a lot of issues. The reviews the book were receiving were excellent, but it was hard to acquire those reviews and garner more sales.  Even Philip's beautiful work on the sequel didn't catch the eye of readers.

It was disappointing and heart-breaking. I loved the new covers, but it was clear that the tastes of the reading public has changed significantly.  If a cover is not a photo-manip, a lot of readers tell me they regard it as "cheap."  This especially seems true with UF/PNR/YA covers.

The Vampire Bride series is dear to my heart. When it’s reviewed by book reviewers, it receives stellar accolades, but it is difficult to get many to look beyond the covers. I hope to draw in more readers by redoing the cover artwork by hiring the fabulous cover artist Claudia McKinney of Phat Puppy Art

Recently, Helena Cruz of Cruz Designs took photos of model, Megan Young, dressed as the main character, Lady Glynis Wright, at a beautiful location in San Antonio, Texas.
My plan is to give these photos to Claudia McKinney as a base for the new artwork.

Claudia has already created two covers of recently published books for me, plus one that soon will be released.
The response to her covers has been extremely positive and THE LAST BASTION OF THE LIVING has become the biggest seller of my self-published work.

I started an Indiegogo campaign to help fund the new covers, but the generosity of a good friend made that campaign unnecessary and I canceled it. If you did contribute, I will honor the perk promised.

So be on the lookout for the big cover reveal of the new covers for THE VAMPIRE BRIDE series!! I have already seen the first two covers and they are AMAZING!  The third cover should be done within a week.

I'm so excited to give my beloved series a new cover overhaul!

Quick News

The Vampire Bride Series New Cover Project Indigogo campaign has been canceled. The kindness of someone in my personal life rendered it obsolete, so we're removing the campaign. If you did donate, I will honor your donation by providing the perks promised.

Thank you!

Claiming Victory in the Face of Bad Reviews

I'm reposting this post from June 29, 2011 in light of the recent explosions in the book review blogsphere over negative reviews and how authors respond to them.  I remember this event very clearly because I was just eerily calm about it all. That's when I knew I had learned my lesson and developed my thick skin.

As the July 5, 2011 drop date approaches for THE FIRST DAYS, more and more review sites are posting their insights on the first book in the AS THE WORLD DIES ZOMBIE TRILOGY.

Like any writer, I'm hoping for some good, solid positive buzz.  I felt my own personal review season got off to a great start with the
Starred Review  from Publisher's Weekly.  I am not going to lie.  I wear that sucker as a badge of honor.  I'll probably have it engraved on my tombstone.  When I saw that review, I was speechless.  It was like the publishing gods smiled down at me and acknowledged all my blood, sweat and tears on the road to publication.  Hell, I'm grinning as I'm writing this.

But, of course, for all the good reviews I get, there are always the negative ones that are going to pop up. When I first started on this career path, I read every review and believed them.  A good review made me feel like the world's greatest writer.  A negative review confirmed I was a worthless hack.

It was hard to process the conflicting reviews barreling down on me:  I love the characters in this book!  I hate the characters in this book!  The characters were so real!  The characters were cliche stereotypes!  The plot was amazing!  There was no plot!  I cried I was so emotionally moved!  I threw this book across the room 'cause it was crap!  This is the best writer ever!  This writer sucks!

My moods were easily manipulated by the subjective viewpoints of reviewers online to the point where I had to swear off reading the reviews.  It took me a long time to get a healthy viewpoint on reviews.

Writers are constantly slashed by the sword of the subjective.  One agent may love your writing while another hates it.  A publishing house may declare your book complete drivel, while another plunks down a ton of money because they love it so much.  One review site will pin five stars to your review, while another gives you zero.

Trust me, when you're starting out in this business, that sword of the subjective sucks and sucks the big, ripe one.  It hurts like hell and sometimes that pain is enough to make people quite trying to accomplish their dreams.  But if you keep going and learn to shield yourself against that terrible sword, it does get easier to deal with.

Tonight, my friend (and fellow writer) Kody Boye told me about a particularly negative review THE FIRST DAYS just received.

"Don't read it," he said ominously.

"What did they say?"  I asked.

He told me one or two points.

"Huh?"  I answered.  "Did they read the book?"

"I guess.  Don't worry.  Someone was defending you in the comments."

"Well, at least they're discussing the book!"  I declared, claiming victory.

A part of me wanted to be upset, but I fought that away, reminding myself of the simple truth I came to understand a few years ago.

Some people will love my books, some will hate my books, and usually for the exact same reasons.

The brutal truth of the matter is that everyone has an opinion. I'm not saying that some reviewers aren't absolute dicks in their reviews. Some are. I have seen a few reviews by very well-respected critics bashing well-known authors works in a way that appeared really personal and downright nasty. But as a writer, I have to believe that when any reviewer bashes the author or the book in a way that comes across as mean for the sake of mean, readers will recognize it.

In closing, I thought I'd share this little gem. It's an Amazon review on THE LIVING DEAD BOY AND THE ZOMBIE HUNTERS, a mid-grade horror novel I wrote (that adults can enjoy as well) for the younger zombie fans. It knocked down my rating pretty badly, but I can't believe anyone reading it will take it seriously. I mean...would you?

And is that a compliment to PRETTY WHEN SHE DIES? Or not? Hrmmm.....

Tomorrow I'm switching gears and going to talk about recent changes in my writing career.

As always, thanks for reading my blog and feel free to leave a comment.

The Internet Has Exploded Again!! - Authors Behaving Badly

Things went to hell on Goodreads again last week.  I was chatting on Facebook when Giselle from Xpresso Reads made a comment on Twitter about another author going off the rails.  I messaged her and she sent me the links.  I followed them and landed at ground zero of a nuclear explosion going off.

Embracing The Spooky

Ghosts, wraiths, specters, and all sorts of creepy dead stuff is invading my novels.  From PRETTY WHEN SHE KILLS to UNTOLD TALES VOLUME 3, my novels are all getting a good shot of the things from beyond the grave (not zombies or vampires...the other wispy stuff).  I'm not sure why this is happening, but I'm not going to shy away from it.

Strangely, when I ask fans what monster they would like me to write about, more and more "ghosts" is drifting to the top of the list.

Are ghosts the new big thing?

Is my subconscious picking up on that?

Hrmmm....

Looming Deadlines and the Finish Line for PRETTY WHEN SHE KILLS

One of the hardest lessons I've learned in the last few years is that my job is really never truly done.  Once I self-published THE FIRST DAYS, the question that was immediately asked was "When is the next one out?"  And that is the question I have heard over and over again and will continued to hear until the good Lord takes me home.

PRETTY WHEN SHE KILLS Plot Reveal!!

Amaliya Vezorak never believed in happy endings…

When Amaliya harnessed her necromancer powers to defeat her greatest enemy, she believed she had finally found a happy ending with Cian, her lover and the vampire master of Austin, Texas. That happiness is short-lived when the dangerous vampire half-siblings out of San Antonio attempt a takeover of Austin in order to capture Amaliya and use her power for their own devices.

Meanwhile, Cian’s mysterious vampire sister from New Orleans demands a visit to Austin to negotiate an alliance, but most likely wants to kill them to avenge the vampire who created them.

To make matters worse, Samantha, Cian’s ex, is seeing ghosts, the untested vampire hunters of Austin are running scared as a supernatural war looms, and a mysterious man is hunting Amaliya with the help of her one time lover, Pete.

When Amaliya’s grandmother, a powerful medium, experiences terrible visions that reveal there is another necromancer vampire and she is crying out for help, Amaliya realizes happy endings do not come easily…

Video Blog #2-About the AS THE WORLD DIES zombie trilogy

I recently decided it was time to get over my extreme shyness when it comes to photos and video. I've always disliked having my picture taking or being on film. It's been very hard to overcome my phobia and embrace the new media.  I realize that I may never get a chance to meet a lot of the people who have been incredibly supportive of my writing career--you, the fans. This is my way of reaching out to you and letting you know a bit about myself.

The first video was all about my writing career. This video is all about AS THE WORLD DIES and it's changing looks through the years.  Enjoy!
