My Halloween Happily Ever After

Five years ago I married the love of my life, Corey Hollins. I waited a very long time to get married, never willing to "settle." I didn't want to get married for the sake of getting married. When I met Corey I knew instantly he was someone very special. Little did I realize that he was THE ONE.

Over the last decade, he has encouraged me to greater heights in my writing career and has been my stalwart supporter. He loves me despite all my weird writer quirks and is my very best friend. I never dreamed I could love anyone as much as I love him.

After 2 1/2 years of being best friends, and 3 1/2 years living together, we decided to marry on the spur of the moment. We barely gave ourselves a month to get ready. Our tiny Halloween wedding ended up a little bigger than we expected, but it was a beautiful October day and the friends and family that attended made it special.

Yes, I wore black. :)

Yes, I am a woman. Yes, I write horror. Yes, I write about zombies. Deal with it.

This weekend I appeared at the Shreveport Zombie Walk with the fabulous and extremely talented Joe McKinney, author of Dead City. He is one of my favorite people in the world and a favorite author to boot. Last year we had fun sitting on the zombie panel at the Aliens to Zombies Convention in Hollywood, and hung out later in the day with our spouses and the producer who optioned AS THE WORLD DIES. The Shreveport Zombie Walk is organized by a friend of mine, author Michelle Suhar-McCrary, who edited the Dead Set anthology with Joe McKinney a few years ago. Seeing my two friends again is enough of a reason to drive seven hours to Louisiana, but the Zombie Walk also supports the Shreveport Food Bank. All the shambling zombies donate canned goods to be a part of the walk.

Soooooooo...the hubby and I loaded up the SUV and drove to Shreveport on Friday night.

I had a lot of fun during the event. It's always fun looking at the costumes and enjoying the company of friends. But one thing did bother me: I was virtually ignored by some of the zombie fans.

Joe McKinney and I had our own tables set parallel to each other. I fixed up my table with the usual skulls, etc and gave him a few things for his table, too. As the day wore on, I noticed something that started to bother me. Though I did have some really nice people come by my table to chat with me, ask about ebooks, and a few even bought a book or two, I was ignored by the majority of people who walked up to Joe McKinney's table. I watched as most of the male zombie fans utterly ignored me, not even looking at my books or at me. I began to feel like I was invisible and went out of my way to greet people.  I was ignored.

And then there were the comments:

"I read ADULT books."

"So is this book gonna to replace Twilight?" said in a mocking voice.

"I bet all your fans are teenagers."

"Just women like your books, huh?"

When I corrected this person and explained that my fans are diverse from housewives to active duty soldiers  I got this response:

"Oh, soldiers like your books? Really?"

I answered these questions/comments with a smile.  Even when one man went out of his way to mock me as a horror writer, making sure I knew that he doesn't believe in female horror writers, I just kept smiling. It slowly sank in that I was being disregarded due to my gender and my profession.

Though I had a good time overall, on the way home last night, the fact I was completely ignored by most of the people who made a beeline for the male zombie writer really started to sting. Add in the barbed comments and I was left wondering if I can find my success in my choice of genre. I was really shaken for a bit.

In the past I have had men and women tell me they were SHOCKED a woman could write a good zombie book and were surprised when they liked mine. I have been told by readers I shouldn't write horror but paranormal romance, YA, and urban fantasy, which is to me the equilvant of telling me to get into the kitchen and make a sammich. It's acceptable for women to write paranormal romance, YA, and urban fantasy, but not horror is what that comment says to me. But I've never been blatantly disregarded in real life.

Earlier today I felt both numb and angry over the experience. The stories in my head are horror stories, but today I realized I am blessed that I am able to crossover to mainstream readers. Yesterday left me shaken and wondering if I would find the support of horror fans for my writing.

After sharing my experience on Facebook today, I was overwhelmed by the positive response. Even people who were at the walk, but never made it to my table said very nice things. Other female writers in the genre shared their own concerns while readers of both genders and all ages assured me they don't judge a book by the gender of the writer.

Yet, I am now woefully aware of the fact that there are those who dismiss a female horror/zombie writer outright. I refuse to change my name to R. Frater on my books in hopes of someone mistaking me as a male writer. I will continue to write the stories that are born in my quite morbid imagination and present them under my real name. If my gender keeps certain readers away, then I guess they're not someone I want reading my books.

P.S.
My overall experience in Shreveport has always been very positive and I'm very grateful to all the kindness expressed in my direction. But yesterday there was definitely a segment of the population (a small one I'm sure) that revealed their bias.

Writing Success!!! An Update!!

Here is a quick update on my writing projects. Enjoy!

DEAD SPOTS

As you have noticed, I haven't updated since last week. I have a very good reason for my absence. I was wrapping up DEAD SPOTS for Tor. I had lost some writing time due to illness (first severe allergies and vertigo, then cluster migraines) and once I felt better, I just trucked through to the end. My final day working on the novel I wrote 15,000 words. It was pretty intense. I have turned over the manuscript to my agent for her to review. I should have her notes soon, tweak whatever she suggests, then its off to my editor at Tor.

Happily, my test readers have absolutely loved the novel and its premise, so hopefully you will, too. I don't have a publication date for the novel, but I hope it comes out in 2013.  Keep your fingers crossed.

My Next Project
NaNoWriMo is right around the corner and every year something prevents me from participating. This year my calendar is free, so I'm going to be writing a novella set in the PRETTY WHEN SHE DIES universe.

The novella features Aimee and Cass from PRETTY WHEN SHE KILLS. Cass is a dhamphir (half vampire-half human), and Aimee, her girlfriend, is a witch. The novella is all about how they meet and end up throwing down with a big bad.

I even have the cover artwork already done by the fabulous Claudia McKinney of Phat Puppy Art!

My only problem is that I don't have a title yet.  Therefore, I need your help coming up with one! The novella will most likely have the subtitle "A Pretty When She Dies Universe Novella" so the Pretty When She... tag isn't necessary. If you come up with a really great idea using it though, I'm more than willing to use it. The person who comes up with the winning title will receive a free autographed paperback of the completed novella upon publication.

Entries I like so far are:
Blood of a Witch - Tine Davidson
Of Blood and Magick - Melanie Findlay and Lindsay Galloway
Pretty When They Collide - Rhiannon Mills
Pretty When She Falls - Dorothy Cannon O'Keefe
The Dhamphir, The Witch, The Dead - Jr Wall

To offer your suggestions, just make it in the comments section of this blog or on my Pretty When She Dies Facebook page. At the end of October, I'll compile my favorites and everyone will be able to vote on their favorite.

Good luck!

Status on Other Projects

AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES VOLUME 3 - The book is on hold until early next year.  It kept getting bumped for other projects, but also self-publishing is costly. My self-publishing budget for the year has been used up, so I'll be concentrating on projects where I already have the covers completed.

PRETTY WHEN SHE DESTROYS - I'm going to be working on the novel starting in December (unless I finish NaNoWriMo early) and aim for a March 2013 release date. I'd like to wrap up the trilogy for the sake of the fans. I know how rough it can be to wait around for the final installment of a trilogy.

THE LAMENT OF THE VAMPIRE BRIDE - This will be my really big project next year.  This third book will bring a conclusion to the battle of wills between Vlad and Glynis. When the fourth book comes out, it will be concentrating on new aspects of Glynis's life.

THE MIDNIGHT SPELL - Expect this YA paranormal novel from me and Kody Boye to be out early in 2013. Maybe January or February.

Of course, I have a million other ideas rattling around in my head, too. I'm still trying to sort out which ones I want to concentrate on next year.

The Contest Details
So fans and friends, want to help me title a new book? I will be writing a novella set in the PRETTY WHEN SHE DIES universe during NaNoWriMo. The novella features Aimee and Cass from PRETTY WHEN SHE KILLS. Cass is a dhamphir (half vampire-half human), and Aimee, her girlfriend, is a witch. The novella is all about how they meet and end up throwing down with a big bad. I've already have the cover commissioned. Claudia McKinney of Phat Puppy Artwill be doing her magic and it's going to be awesome. The cover features both Cass and Aimee and fits in beautifully with the covers from the rest of the series.

My only problem: I don't have a title!

The novella will most likely have the subtitle "A Pretty When She Dies Universe Novella" so the Pretty When She... tag isn't necessary. If you come up with a really great idea using it though, I'm more than willing to use it.

To offer your suggestions, just make it in the comments section of this blog or on my Pretty When She Dies Facebook page. At the end of October, I'll compile my favorites and everyone will be able to vote on their favorite. The person who comes up with the winning title will receive a free autographed paperback of the completed novella upon publication.

Good luck!

How Fans Can Keep Their Favorite Author in the Writing Business

Note: This is a repost from October 2011.

I've noticed a lot of fans really don't understand how much power they have to keep their favorite writers in the business of writing new books.  Even something as simple as buying the first book in a trilogy or series can ensure that the rest of the trilogy or series will be published.  I know of trilogies and series that were canceled because the first book's sales did not meet the publisher's expectations.  Also, indie authors have to fund their own books, so if the first book of a series does not sell, it's actually a cost-saving device to cancel the series and direct their energies elsewhere.

So as a refresher, I thought I'd share this post again.

Enjoy!

Over the last six years, I have personally witnessed the power of fans.  If not for their almost rabid support when I was writing AS THE WORLD DIES as an online serial, I may never have finished the story that would eventually lead to a three book deal with Tor.

If not for fans, I would not have won the Dead Letter award two years in a row.

If not for fans, I would not have had the sales that drew the attention of a producer from Hollywood.

If not for fans, I would not have reviews on Amazon.com and other online book sellers.

If not for fans, I would not have...more fans.

Fans are extremely important to any writer's career.  They wield the power to push you to greater heights -- like bestseller lists -- and better and bigger book deals.

The reality is that fans can enable a writer to keep writing and churning out books they will enjoy.  Though inspiration and dedication are a huge component to writing a book, any writer needs sales to keep them on the writing path.

Most writers have day jobs (either full-time or part-time), families, and social lives.  Writing is often something they do after everyone else is in bed, or early in the morning.  They struggle to carve out time to take hold of their inspiration and wrangle it into a cohesive story.  Most of the time, writers are not making one red cent off that writing. They're doing it because they love to write and are probably hoping it will lead to some monetary reward in the future.

I doubt there isn't a writer out there that dreams of writing full-time. But it is very hard to get to that point.  Hell, I'm trying to make my own full-time writing gig stick.

So here are some tips on how to keep your favorite writer(s) doing what you want them to do....write.

1.  Buy their books.

This seems like a logical way to support authors, but a lot of people don't realize how important sales really are.  On more than one occasion I have had someone tell me "I'll buy your book at Half-Priced Books when I find it"  or  "I'll get it from the library."  Though the initial sale DOES count toward an author's royalties, all second-hand sales and library loans do not.

If your favorite author is published through a major publishing house, sales will dictate whether or not that publishing house will buy the author's next project.

If your favorite author is an indie author, most likely the money they make off of self-publishing is going to fund their next self-published work. Cover art and editing are very expensive.

So when you buy a book (not second-hand), it really does help your favorite author.

Note:  I totally get buying second hand when you don't have the funds. I've done it myself.  Later on when I had money, I bought my favorite authors latest books at the bookstore.

2.  Write reviews (on goodreads, amazon.com, etc)
A lot of readers don't understand the power of their opinion to influence other readers to read their favorite author.  With so many books being published every week, people look to reviews by other readers to help them decide which book they should buy or avoid.  If you love a book, write a review.  Even if it is a short one, it does help out.

3.  Loan your books to friends.
You may think this contradicts #1, but it actually doesn't.  If you're trying to convert a friend to your favorite author, chances are they would rather read a borrowed book then risk spending money on an unknown author.  If they like the book you loaned them, maybe they'll buy a copy of their own, or later buy the author's latest work.

4.  Spread the word on your social media sites (or your blog!)
I was turned on to the JENNI POX series by J.L. Bryan when I saw the Bookish Brunette twittering about the books.  I read up the reviews on the series on goodreads and purchased the first book. I loved it!  I know I have gained new readers because they saw a fan talk about my books on facebook, twitter, or other media sites.  Blogging has also brought me a slew of new fans.

5.  Email your favorite author.
A short email to your favorite author really does help.  Writing is a lonely endeavor and hearing from fans about how much they like your work is very energizing.

So to sum up this post, if you want to keep your favorite author writing, buy their books, spread the word about them, and let the author know you appreciate them.

"Hey, Rhiannon Frater, when is the sequel coming out?"

I am often asked about sequels. A lot of fans have their favorite among the books that I've written and hope that I will continue with that world. Even when the author note says the book is a standalone or the book is the final in a series, I still get queries.

Therefore...to clear up any confusion:

There is no 4th book in the As The World Dies trilogy. It's a trilogy.

There is no sequel to The Last Bastion of the Living. It's a standalone novel. I don't even have an inkling of what comes next after the book ends.

There will only be three As The World Dies Untold Tales. The final volume has been delayed, but will include a 4th short story set 100 years in th
e future.

There are only three books in the Pretty When She Dies trilogy, BUT there are plans for at least one novella set in that universe. If the novella is popular and sells well, I'll consider either spinning off Cass and Aimee in their own series or continuing a novella series.

The Vampire Bride series is open ended with plans for offshoot novellas on other characters (Erzsebet, Gavriel & Ilinca). The major conflict between Vlad and Glynis is resolved in the third book.

I am considering making THE LIVING DEAD BOY into a trilogy. I have a pretty solid idea for book two that I rather like.

I have plenty of other awesome novel ideas that I'm dying to write. I don't want to get bogged down in series and sequels and all that jazz. I have a lot more ideas bouncing around in my head demanding to be written. I hope my fans will come along on the ride.

WARNING: There are spoilers in the comments about SIEGE. Read with caution.

Monster Con Appearance In San Antonio Canceled

The last week or so has been miserable on my end. I've been having migraines tag-teaming me like no tomorrow and I'm beginning to forget what it's like not to be in pain. It's really been rough on me physically and I'm behind in DEAD SPOTS. Not the best feeling in the world.

On top of that, I had to cancel my appearance at Monster Con in San Antonio, Texas in a few weeks. It really broke my heart to do so, but it became clear that the venue had become an issue. Monster Con will be in a mall.  A few months ago, the mall was pretty empty and had a lot of space for an event. Recently the mall management has been filling its store space, compressing the area where the con will take place. One of those spaces was where the authors were going to have panels and readings. Another suitable location couldn't be found, so all the author events were basically cancelled. The only other alternative was to try to somehow do readings and panels in the main mall area with the crowd bustling around us.

I had planned to attend the convention with the model who portrays Glynis on the cover of The Vampire Bride series in full costume and relaunch the series there. Kody and I ran into some glitches with the formatting of the new edition of the book (because the new interior design is beautiful, but complicated) and have been trying to resolve it with the publisher (Createspace).  Because of the delays, in order to receive my books in time for the convention, I would have paid a huge additional cost for shipping.  I was willing to pay it because I thought I'd have an opportunity via panels and my reading to promote the books. Once I realized this was not an option, I had to regard the expense of the convention with a critical eye. Adding in our promotional materials, travel expenses, hotel, etc on top of the cost of getting in an express shipment of books, it became clear attending the convention had devolved into a no-win situation for me financially.  I have attended conventions before where I did not sit on panels or have readings and spent the time watching people walk by my table all day without a glance in my direction. It's not fun.

Most of the guest authors canceled within twenty-four hours of the bad news. After a long discussion with my husband and my bff, Kody Boye, I realized that my only remaining reason to do the con (and take a hit to my finances) was because my dear friend is running the convention. I didn't want to let her down., but I had to look after my own career. With a sad heart, I had to cancel.

I wish Monster Con all the best and hope they have a killer turn out. I have no ill-will toward the organizers and I do wish things could have worked out differently. This has been yet another difficult learning experience for me.

Meanwhile, if I could only get rid of this migraine...

P.S. If parts of this post don't make sense, I blame my exploding brain.
