A Change of Plans - Abandoning NaNoWriMo

Sometimes my muse disagrees with my choice of writing projects. Sometimes I can win the fight, but other times I have to give in.

Sadly, this time, I have to give in to the muse. She realized something before I did.

I have been very open about being a survivor of abuse. I am often in awe that I made it out of my childhood alive, let alone sane. If not for my amazing mother and her constant support and love, I don't believe I would be here today. I was blessed with at least one good parent.

Because I am a survivor I struggle with certain triggers that can activate my PTSD.  Therapy has helped me out tremendously and my anxiety attacks are few and far between. Weirdly, there are time periods during the year that are just harder for me to write about certain themes. November has been a rough month for me all my life. This November has been a lot better than previous ones, a sign of my progressive healing, so I decided to take on NaNoWriMo. My choice for a project was my novella in the PRETTY WHEN SHE DIES universe featuring Aimee the witch and Cass the dhamphir from PRETTY WHEN SHE KILLS.

I loaded up the cover artwork on my background, made a new project file for the novella, and did my background sheets for my characters. I was flying in the beginning of November then faltered. It grew more difficult to write and I found myself struggling just to open the project.

While writing last night, I finally realized why I'm having such a rough time. 1) This is November. A difficult month with an invisible trigger. 2) One of the characters in the story is in a relationship that mirrors an abusive relationship.  Though the two characters in the relationship are a vampire and witch and the relationship is all about the vampire trying to keep the witch in servitude, the underlying themes are the same.  I realized that I have been inadvertently triggering myself with my own writing.

So I'm setting aside PRETTY WHEN THEY COLLIDE until after the new year when I'm out of a difficult time period. I'm going to aim for a March 2013 release date for it. I want the story about Cass and Aimee to be the best it can be and right now I feel I'm letting them down.

I have written about abusive relationships before (Jenni from AS THE WORLD DIES was a battered wife, and Glynis is abused by Dracula in THE TALE OF THE VAMPIRE BRIDE), so I do think the combination of the themes of the story and the dark cloud of November has been my problem.

Therefore, I'm moving on to THE MIDNIGHT SPELL to wrap it up and get it to the editor in a timely manner for its February 2013 publication.

I'm a little bummed not to finish NaNoWriMo, but I have to take care of myself.

The Midnight Spell Cover

Yesterday was the big cover reveal for my upcoming Paranormal YA that I'm writing with Kody Boye.  The reveal was hosted by Xpresso Tours and the response was overwhelmingly positive.  I thought I'd share the cover here today for those who may have missed the reveal.

So...what do you think?

Cover Reveal for THE MIDNIGHT SPELL Today!!

My very first foray into YA is having its big cover reveal today. Giselle of Xpresso Blog Tours put together a huge cover reveal for THE MIDNIGHT SPELL.  She did a great job getting out the word to the blogsphere and we have well over a hundred participating today!

My co-author, Kody Boye, and I are extremely excited about the cover by Claudia McKinney of Phat Puppy Art. It perfectly captures our characters of Christy and Adam in the middle of them doing their midnight spell.  Also, kudos to www.gingerleeoriginals.com for the wonderful photograph that became the basis for the cover. Ashley of Bookish Brunette Designs did the typography and she did a killer job.

Please stop by one or two, or all the blogs participating today and let them know what you think!  Thank you again to Giselle of Xpresso Tours for putting together the cover reveal. And special thanks to all the participating bloggers!!

Available Today-Cthulhu's Daughter and Other Horror Tales

Cthulhu's Daughter and Other Horror Tales
From the depths of the darkest waters of the ocean to the eternal darkness of space, Rhiannon Frater crafts taunt tales of terror to enthrall avid readers of the genre. Each short story explores a different type of monster from the shambling undead to devourers of worlds.

In Cthulhu’s Daughter explore madness and terror as a young woman’s mind slowly unravels as a hurricane bears down on her hometown. Step back in time to witness one man’s flight from the ravages of war only to encounter a pack of werewolves in Fleeing and slink through the shadows of a mansion where an archaeologist obsesses over the mummy queen residing in her sarcophagus in Amunet. Encounter a sentient nanny robot hoping to escape deletion while struggling to keep her ward safe from her abusive employer in Flesh and Circuits, or rush along city streets as a seeing-eye dog tries to save her blind master in Stop Requested. Witness the struggle between a mortal mother and the vampire who wants to take away her ailing child and turn him into a creature of the night in The Two Mothers. And, finally, discover what terrors lurk beyond the reflective surface of a mirror in The Key.

Each tale carries Rhiannon Frater’s distinctive stamp of stunning action coupled with realistic characters that the reader either cheers for or fears.

A Private Message In a Public Place

Don't you mess with a little girl's dream

'Cause she's liable to grow up mean

Surprised you to find that I'm laughing?

You thought that you'd find me in tears
You thought I'd be crawling the walls
Like a tiny mosquito and trembling in fear

Well you may be king for the moment

But I am a queen understand
And I've got your pawns and your bishops
And castles
All inside the palm of my hand

While you were looking the other way

While you had your eyes closed
While you were licking your lips
'Cause I was miserable
While you were selling your soul
While you were tearing a hole in me

I was taking control

Now I have taken control

Now I have taken control...

This is beginning to feel good

Watching you squirm in your shoes
A small bead of sweat on your brow
And a growl in your belly your scared to let through

You thought you could keep me from loving

You thought you could feed on my soul
But while you were busy destroying my life
What was half in me has become whole

While you were looking the other way

While you had your eyes closed
While you were licking your lips
'Cause I was miserable
While you were selling your soul
While you were tearing a hole in me

I was taking control

Now I have taken control

Now I have taken control...

So this is how it feels

To breath in the summer air
The feel the sand between my toes
And love inside my ear
All those things that you taught me to fear
I've got them in my garden now
And you're not welcome here

Come a little bit closer

Let me look at you
I gave you the benefit
Of the doubt it's true
But keep in mind my darling
Not every saint is a fool

While you were looking the other way

While you had your eyes closed
While you were licking your lips
'Cause I was miserable
While you were selling your soul
While you were tearing a hole in me

I was taking control

Now I have taken control

Now I have taken control...

Don't you mess with me

--Poe, Control

You're not allowed in my life. Do not try to enter it again. After twenty years of silence, this is the only message you will have from me for the rest of your life.

You are NOT in my life and NEVER will be again.

Apologies to fans, friends, and family, but I had to take a stand against someone to AGAIN remind them they are not allowed to hurt me. Thank you --Rhiannon Frater

My Thoughts On the Election

I don't like to talk about politics. I really don't. Everyone in this country (and the world) has their own viewpoint and set of beliefs that dictates how they vote. I may or may not agree with them, but I do believe in their right to their own opinion. This is the country of Freedom of Speech.

I have family, friends, and fans in both political parties who are passionate about their point of view. Sometimes if I don't immediately agree with them or have an opposite viewpoint on a particular topic, I'm usually tagged as being on "the other side."

The reality is that I'm an independent voter. I vote for who best reflects my viewpoint when it comes to upholding the ideals of the Constitution and equality for all Americans.  In the past I have voted Republican  Libertarian, and Democrat in a variety of races, both national and local.  I also have a healthy dislike of the two party system (I think it creates the contention we've seen this year), I don't care for the electoral vote (I'd rather we go popular vote), and I really dislike the long length of the presidential election.

I am also a person of faith. I have a very strong belief in God that is the foundation of my life. I believe wholeheartedly in the teachings of Jesus, but not necessarily in those of any particular church. I also believe that everyone has a right to believe, or not believe, as they see fit. I believe my faith is personal and I don't strive to push my beliefs on anyone else.

I am also a woman and I care about the issues that affects us.  I believe in equality for all. I believe in fiscal and social responsibility. Also, as a freelancer I care a lot about taxes (OUCH!) and healthcare.

When I was growing up I was taught to respect the president whether I voted for him (and hopefully one day, her) or not. I was taught to pray that our nation's leaders be wise in their actions.  I was taught that at the end of the day we are all Americans, no matter our party affiliation. The downright hostility and anger I saw on the social media sites throughout the election process greatly saddened me and downright depressed me at times.

So how do I feel after the election?

I was VERY happy to see the asshats who talked about "legitimate rape" and that sort of nonsense lose their bids. I was happy to see equality taking root in four more States. I was also happy to see so many women (both Republican and Democrat) taking their place in Congress.  I was glad that Governor Romney was gracious in defeat (though McCain's concession speech was far superior 4 years ago).  I was impressed with President Obama's acceptance speech and felt it hit all the right notes to move our country forward. I pray that God will give him the wisdom to move us forward as a united nation after such a hostile election, and I would have done the same if Governor Romney had won.

And that's all I got to say...

NaNoWriMo Time!

I've been wanting to do NaNoWriMo for years, but something always seemed to get in the way of actually participating. Either it was day job deadlines, or revision deadlines, or trips, or being ill. This year I made sure that November was free so I could participate in NaNoWriMo.

Since the idea is to write 50,000 words in one month, I've decided to write my novella set in the world of PRETTY WHEN SHE DIES.  It features Cass and Aimee, the dhamphir and witch introduced in PRETTY WHEN SHE KILLS.  Claudia McKinney of Phat Puppy Art has already done the cover and I'm using it as my desktop background for inspiration.  I am presently holding a contest to name the novella, so please feel free to offer up any ideas in comments. The prize is a signed paperback of the novella. The contest ends Sunday, November 4, 2012.

I've been dying to write this novella for the last three years and I'm so excited to finally dive into it. I'm already making good progress. You can watch the progress bar on the left hand side bar on my blog to see how I'm doing.

Please send me all your good vibes and encouragement! I'd love to get this novella tucked away so it can have an early release next year.

Wish me luck!

Here is my NaNoWriMo profile if you'd like to add me!
