The Fabulous Stephen A. North Has Written A Review of As The World Dies: The First Days!!

The fabulous Stephen A. North, author of Dead Tide, recently purchased my novel, As The World Dies: The First Days, and let me know he was looking forward to reading it. It was definitely a nail biting moment for me! It's a little bit scary when other authors in the genre read your work. Especially when they have the honor of being the first novel published by the Library of the Living Dead press.

So, tonight, when Stephen let me know he was writing an Amazon.com review (the 20th), I was nervous and excited.

Now that I have read it, I'm just excited. What an awesome little review he wrote! It made me grin and I feel fabulous about it.

You can check it out here.

And while you are on Amazon.com, check out Stephen's book here. He deserves a little zombie love, so pick up his book if you haven't so far!

Amazon.Com is Still Screwy

I'm not sure what is going on anymore. I checked my sales rank and it has improved quite a bit from this afternoon. I'm starting to wonder if the glitch is delaying the reporting of sales to my account.

As for the Kindle sales...they rawked today.

I'm finishing the day with the Kindle book looking like this:

Popular in these categories: (What's this?)

#17 in Kindle Store > Kindle Books > Fiction > Action & Adventure
#36 in Kindle Store > Kindle Books > Fiction > Horror

UGH!!! I Hate It When Things Go Wrong

As The World Dies: The First Days was part of some weird glitch yesterday that resulted in books being listed as Unavailable for sale even though they really were. This did not just affect my novel, but the novels of quite a few other Independent Authors. I estimate As The World Dies: The First Days was not for sale up to 18 hours. I have to admit being a bit gutted over the whole fiasco.

Sales were really good all last week and yesterday was proving to be the best day of all. Then abruptly sales just stopped. Usually the last book of the day sells sometime in the late evening. This was mid-day. So I checked my listing on Amazon.com and found it was not available. I freaked. Panicked. Fired off an email to tech support. Then calmed down enough to start looking at some of the community boards I'm part of. I found out I was part of a big fuck-up going on with Amazon.com.

So, As The World Dies: The First Days fell in its sales rank and this has altered how it comes up in the Amazon.com search. *sighs* It's like having my kid being punished for something she didn't do! I want to go slug someone at Amazon and yell at them for being mean to her. Of course, my more sensible side is telling me to chill out and not worry about it.

Meanwhile, the Kindle sales are way up and doing great. I'm not going to complain there.
It's latest stats look like this:

Popular in these categories: (What's this?)

#31 in Kindle Store > Kindle Books > Fiction > Action & Adventure
#49 in Kindle Store > Kindle Books > Fiction > Horror

I think what got me so crazed about the mess up with Amazon.com is that with this uncertain economy, I would like to hope I could fall back on my book sales for a little financial support if anything were to happen at my job. Not that I think I'm going anywhere, but the consistency of sales was rather reassuring.

Right now I haven't sold a paperback book in 24 hours. It is unnerving. At least my Kindle sales are there to keep me calmer.

Gawd, I'm such a piece of work.

Anyway, enough grousing. I got edits to work on. I got a book to get out.

As The World Dies: The First Days Is STILL AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE No Matter What Amazon.com Says

Today sales were pretty brisk on Amazon.com then they suddenly came to an abrupt halt. When I checked the listing, it read that the books is not available.

WTF?

I checked in with other Indie Authors and this has been happening all day to them as well. I'm not sure when the listing will be corrected. I did fire off an email to technical support. Hopefully, this will only last a few hours.

The book is STILL for sale via my online store, so if you want to buy a copy, please click on the cover to the novel in the sidebar.

Such a weird glitch!

And just when my migraine was finally gone!!!!

The Terror and Joy That Are Reviews

Most of the authors I know love to hear that people appreciate all their hard work and adore their writing. It validates all your time and effort and salves some of your anxiety over whether or not your story is any good.

In all honesty, I write what I want to read. A sudden inspiration will spring up in a dream or a odd moment during the day and I will want to follow that train of thought to the end of the line. Sometimes I find a really cool story I want to share with other people and sometimes I realize that the flash of inspiration was all there was.

The As The World Dies Trilogy was a moment of inspiration based on a dream. It came to me in a flash and I quickly wrote it down. I posted it on a forum on impulse and it was the reviews that inspired me to write out the epic story.

Now, some of the reviews were harsh. I read those along with the positive ones. I wanted to see if there was a kernel of truth in the reviews that were taking aim at the story (and oftentimes, me). If there was something valid in the critique, I learned from it. If not, I dismissed it.
I also learned, in the time span that As The World Dies was online, that sometimes people are hateful just because they want to be. Nothing you write will ever make them happy and they will always pick at you. I still remember this one person saying that Jenni and Katie were so shallow, you could change them into men and no one would know the difference. I read that to my husband and he just shook his head.

The one strength of the story is that the leads are women and view things from a totally different perspective. Jenni, as a mother, has suffered a severe loss of her children and this sends her over the edge in a very strange, yet endearing way. Katie, a bisexual woman, has suffered the loss of her beloved wife and is a nurturer and protector at heart. The need to keep Jenni alive (and later Jason), is what keeps Katie motivated to live. The two of them form a strong bond that they probably would not have made otherwise and become sisters in a new family they create.

Of course, if some of my critics had their choices, Jenni and Katie would have spent most of their time having lesbian sex, had some big strong military type come and take care of them, they never would have found a gun store (c'mon..its freaking Texas!) and the fort would have been overrun immediately by zombies despite the survivors actually having a freaking brain in their head and fighting back.

If I had made all the changes my naysayers had urged, I wouldn't have written my story, but theirs. And that was the biggest lesson I learned during the whole process. Being true to the world, characters, and premise I had created. Happily, other people (the apparent majority) agreed with my view on the story.

Which brings me to my newest reviews...on Amazon! Before, the reviews were a litmus test of how well I was doing with the story, but now I'm trying to build my readership and get the word out about the novel. Every good review is extremely helpful. Of course, at some point, someone is going to hate my book. I'm trying to mentally prepare myself for that. But right now, I would like to appeal to those of you who do like the book and feel its a good read you would recommend to other zombie fans, please write an Amazon review. I would love to hear what you liked about the novel, but also, what you say about the story may encourage someone else to visit the world you love and get to know Katie and Jenni.

Reviews have served a definite purpose in my life. They have encouraged me, taught me, vexed me, and helped promote my book.

Meanwhile, the first review of the brand new first chapter of the second book is in. I handed it off to a co-worker who is also a fan. He loved it! So, I definitely feel I am on the right track.
One more thing, check out this awesome new flyer for Bitefest.

I'm totally in love with it!

Surrounded by Zombies

Strange how I ended up with a zombie trilogy, a zombie novella, and a series of zombie short stories considering my first and foremost love is for the vampire. Though, if I consider my past carefully, I realize that my love for the vampire was born out of my stark fear. They were my childhood bogeymen. They were the things I feared most appearing outside my window. Vampires were my night terror, my personal demon, my greatest fear. The only way I could make peace with that fear was to embrace them, to write about them.

I suppose, in a way, that is what I have now experienced with the zombies. The first time I saw Day of the Dead as a kid, I threw up. It terrified me. I refused to watch anymore zombie movies until an old boyfriend talked me into watching Night of the Living Dead with him. I had such terrible nightmares afterward, again, I swore off watching zombie films.

When my husband and I first started hanging out, we realized quickly we had a lot in common. We were constantly together and never bored, so I suppose it was inevitable we would end up together. For some reason, we decided to watch George A. Romero's Zombie Trilogy. I fell utterly in love with the movies. They scared me to death, but I loved the characters in the stories. I winced for those I cared about when they fell and cheered when ones I hated got their comeuppance. I tried watching a few other zombie movies after I was done with the original trilogy, but none had the feel or the emotional resonance that Romero's did.

I did enjoy the remake of Dawn of the Dead, but again, I only truly cared about whether or not one character lived or died (and he was bitten right before the boat). I feared the zombies, but I just didn't care too much about the characters.

I'm not sure why I wrote that first short story (Tiny Fingers). Maybe it was to gain control over a bad nightmare I had. Or just to try something different. I remember just wanting to get the story into words and posted for people to see. I had read a lot of online zombie fiction before I wrote my own story. And like at lot of the zombie movies, I just didn't really care about the characters or the situations they were in.

As The World Dies: The First Days is exactly what I wanted it to be. A strong zombie story with lots of action, gore and characters you care about. I would never claim to be the master story teller George Romero is in his wonderful tales of the undead, but he definitely inspired me to find the heart of the story and embrace it.

I still love my vampires. I will be returning to them. I admit I was rather snobbish about my vampire novels and treated my zombie story like the red headed stepchild in the beginning. But I have learned to embrace both sets of monsters and the worlds they inhabit.

I'm okay with being not just a writer of vampire fiction, but of zombie fiction as well.

But those werewolves....man...that's a whole other story...

As The World Dies is Available on Amazon.com!!!

As The World Dies is now available on Amazon. com. Though I prefer the fans buy the book from my own eShop (I get a better royalty), I realize sometimes it's much easier for people to buy from Amazon.com.

My first three reviews are up. When I read them I almost cried.

Two are from the proof readers of As The World Dies. They were lucky (or unlucky) enough to read the proof copy and offer up suggestions. One is a horror writer. The other is also a writer, but doesn't like horror. Between the two of them, I was fairly sure they could give me some great insight and suggestions. I'll be honest. Having a horror writer read your stuff is nervewracking because you want the horror fans to love your story. Having a non-horror fan read it, was nervewracking because it was definitely not her genre. The fact that they both loved the book was very flattering and encouraging.

As soon as they heard that the book was on Amazon, they both hopped over to give their support.

The third review is from a fan. What he wrote literally made me cry. When I showed it to my Mother, she choked up quite a bit, too. My mother is very supportive and I don't think she could be any prouder of me. She HATES zombies and horror novels, but loved my book. And since she has been editing and critiquing my works since I was around 10 years old, I know if she doesn't like something, she will tell me. But she loved the book and the characters. She is so excited she's trying to find out where she can find an old mannequin so she can make me a zombie to carry around to conventions. She is a painter, so I know she would do a great job. She has already volunteered to help me man my table at the convention I am planning to attend in October.

The last few days have been a blur. I've been visiting with family (and having them visit me) and I've barely had time to log on and do anything to support the release of the book. I hope to pick up the slack this week and this coming weekend.

For those of you who have ordered the book, let me know what you think when you receive it. I have heard back from one fan and he declared it "beautiful". Frankly, I think it is, too. The cover artwork just blows me away.

For those of you who have read the story, your reviews on Amazon.com would be highly appreciated. Also, spread the word to any horror fans you may know.

Thanks again for all your support!
